Soil - Picture Perfect

Rating: 4

Still somehow managing to keep their heads above water despite not releasing anything genuinely compelling since at least…well…ever really, Chicago crew Soil return with another generic slab of grungey metal drudgery. It seems unnecessarily harsh to criticise a band that have done admittedly well to ride out the wave of hysteria that followed the explosive impact of 2001’s ‘Scars’ album, but with ‘Picture Perfect’ failing to muster up anything that even nearly matches the meaty bounce of breakthrough single ‘Halo’, it’s difficult to gauge why they bothered to. Sappy, crappy ballad ‘Surrounded’ is the frowning achievement of a masterclass in monotony.
