For most metal bands, being widely hailed as one of the greatest grindcore outfits of recent times would be enough. But Pig Destroyer are not most metal bands. Say hello to Natasha; a single 38-minute track that has more in common with the doom-laden strains of Godflesh and Neurosis than the ultra-pissed grind that's become the trio's trademark. Originally released on audio DVD alongside 04's Terrifyer, this experimental tour de force comes brimming with all manner of samples and electronic textures, in addition to Scott Hull's crushing guitar and the tormented vocals of J.R. Hayes. Things begin on an ominous note as twittering birdsong gives way to droning dissonance, and from there on in the listener is hurled between walls of metallic guitar noise and lengthy spells of haunting ambience reminiscent of Swans' Soundtracks For The Blind. This newfound versatility is reflected in Hayes' vocal performance, which runs the gamut from sinister murmur to maniacal howl, and heightens the pervading atmosphere of lingering dread.Natasha was an audacious move that could so easily have ended in disaster, but Pig Destroyer have emerged with a bold and compelling piece of work, proving once and for all that they're no one-trick ponies.
