People In Planes - ‘Beyond The Horizon’

Rating: 9

People in Planes’ second record – but debut UK offering – manages to organise a wealth of ideas, styles and approaches into a cohesive and well rounded whole. Alt rock in the truest sense of the word, the Welsh quintet think nothing of lurching from psych-pop (‘Last Man Standing’) to indie rock (‘Pretty Buildings’) to monolithic prog rock (‘Better Than Life’) sometimes even within the space of single songs (‘Beyond The Horizon’, ‘Vampire’.) It’s a dizzying experience but, thanks to such a consistently compelling approach to melody, is never anything but totally accessible. ‘Beyond The Horizon’ makes for a gloriously uplifting and massively rewarding listening experience.
