Pelican - Ataraxia / Taraxis

Rating: 8

While Pelican haven’t been particularly prolific of late, the Illinois quartet still pack a post-metal punch more than capable of knocking out the competition. This brief addition to their canon might consist of just four songs, but it’s a potent reminder of why we love them. Heavy, expansive guitar patterns form the two songs at the core of the EP, bookended by the ominous acoustic-led title-tracks ‘Ataraxia’ and ‘Taraxis’. It’s the crunching doom of ‘Parasite Colony’ which is most impressive though, swaggering as it does with the vigour of a band still at the peak of their powers. Welcome back, gents.
