Parts And Labor - Receivers

Rating: 8

Brooklynites Parts & Labor's previous album, Mapmaker, was something of a critical hit last year, it mixed riotous percussion with pop intelligence that gave the band an advantage over their art-rock peers. Plus, it was loud as hell. This, their fourth album, is a steadier, more-subdued affair, but the group, now a four-piece, still know when to shred for their lives. Opener Satellites sets the tone well: it's less-frenzied than much of Mapmaker, but features unmistakable clues as to its makers' identities - no otheband creates circuit board squeals like these. And on it rolls, impressing every riff of the way 'til you're sung-out hoarse. Plus, Little Ones features bagpipes! Win.
