Nile - Those Who The God’s Detest Rating: 8Nile’s sixth studio effort does little to tarnish their well-deserved reputation as one of death metal’s most compelling acts, with a decathlon of stunningly rendered, spiritualised anthems making ‘Those Whom The Gods Detest’ one of the trio’s strongest records to date. As per usual, it is Egyptian mysticism and history that serves as the album’s focal point, and Karl Sanders has done a predictably competent job of weaving the numinous (see instrumental number ‘Yezd Desert Ghul Ritual In The Abandoned Towers of Silence’) and the guttural (near nine-minute opus ‘4th Arra Of Dagon’ being a noticeably ominous highlight). Darkly delicious.
