Monotonix - ‘Where Were You When It Happened?’

Fans of the Monotonix live experience may approach the idea of an actual album by the Israeli trio with some trepidation. If you’re not familiar: they crowd surf. Pretty much constantly. Singer Ami Shalev often does so while standing on a drum. It’s chaos, chaos to which the music is kinda incidental. Hence their debut feels more like the score to the film than the film itself – detuned, sludgy garage riffs trundle by, the easier for Yonatan Gat to thrash out midair, Shalev barking over the top. It’s crude, it’s moody, and it rocks, but it’s really just the tiniest taster for those insane shows.
