Menendez - Menendez

Rating: 5

It's a credit to the confidence of UK four-piece Menendez that they avoid smothering every vocal part on their debut album in swathes of reverb. Unfortunately it's also a mistake as neither of their brother-sister vocal duo possesses either a strong enough voice nor a decent enough ear for a hook.

That's not to say this album doesn't have its moments; 'Living On The Shore' possesses a slow-release kind of beauty while 'target track' (quoth the press release) 'Beef Jerky' sounds like Minus The Bear gone shoegaze, which is actually a more appealing proposition than you might imagine. Ultimately, however, this is nothing post-rock fans won't have heard done better elsewhere.
