Marilyn Manson - ‘The High End Of Low’

There’s reason to feel optimistic following 07’s disappointing album, ‘Eat Me, Drink Me’. Manson has re-united with his sidekick, Twiggy Ramirez, and he’s brought in musical mastermind Chris Vrenna (ex-NIN). He’s in a strong position to re-ignite his career; whether he’ll actually do so is less clear. Get past the predictable-sounding single (‘Arma…Geddon’), Manson’s wailings about sadistic love, and the shouty rock “anthems”, and there’s some hope. Subtler tracks like ‘Four Rusted Horses’ show the superior work he can produce when he chooses to. Elsewhere, ‘We’re From America’ recalls the provocative Manson of old. Sadly, there’s far too little of both here.
