If you'd told any indie kid back in 91 that
Ian Brown, Kevin Shields and
Andrew Weatherall had recorded together, they'd have exploded with joy; just because an album that sounds like that hasn't emerged 'til 07 shouldn't diminish its brilliance.
James Chapman – for
Maps is he – starts well enough, all broken noises and blissed-out musery, but then the head-swallowing whoosh fiend that is
'It Will Find You' takes this to another league altogether. Later,
'Liquid Sugar' will recall a shamanaic
'Mogwai Fear Satan' with breakbeats,
'Back + Forth' will be the sort of avant-burble that coloured every
Orbital album, and
'Don't Fear' will provoke lysergic euphoria at its most wrong-footing. Truly,
Maps is your guide for the most mercurially ace trip of the year.
