Malajube - Tromp L’Oeil

Rating: 8

And thus, Malajube's opening track is awash in a Mercury Rev mix, with Julien Mineau singing: "Le mal blanc sur ma main noire". Well, quite. Malajube are from Montreal and sing in French, so if you're looking for immediate lyrical satisfaction, you're best off searching elsewhere. But oh what joys you'll miss, for this is a heady, swirling indie concoction where Gallic eccentricity teams with upbeat, poppy Super Furry Animals or Modest Mouse tunes to transport you somewhere altogether new. Best of all, they're a sensitive troupe that know how to rock out: 'Le Crabe' and 'Fille À Plumes' are riotous cuts, the latter straying towards Oceansize. All in all, this is the birth of a very special band.
