Madina Lake - ‘Attics To Eden’

Rating: 8

Recorded with an extra budget and producer David Bendeth pushing the Chicago quartet to excel themselves, this second album from Madina Lake is, for the most part, a really good, big rock record. Miles better than its predecessor, it’s undeniably cheesy, with regularly clichéd lyrics; second track ‘Let’s Get Out Outta Here’, for example, is mint, but the effects betray an 80s pop affection some might find uncomfortable. Bar the stinker of a ballad ‘Through The Pain’, though, this collection of massive choruses and highly polished songs is pretty impressive – surprising, almost. Incorporating added elements of electronica and newly expanded horizons, Madina Lake have staved off second album syndrome with style.
