Lord Mantis - ‘Spawning The Nefhilim’

Rating: 8

Eyeing ‘Spawning The Nefhilim’s artwork will generate few feelings of promise. The drawings – albeit, far better than what anyone around here could pull off – resemble what John [Baroness] Baizley’s understudy might produce after absorbing a week’s worth of goregrind and old Accused album covers. Never judge a book by its blah, blah, blah ‘cuz Chicago’s Lord Mantis isn’t so much a band as the sound of four guys cornering you in an alley and making sure you don’t escape with at least a black eye, two broken bones and a grade-three concussion. Violent and sludgy they are, with touches of unsettling, heavy-breathing slasher movie antagonist helping focus their destructive tunnel-vision.
