Landmine Marathon - Rusted Eyes Awake

Rating: 7

Two points are seemingly always brought up when Arizona’s Landmine Marathon are mentioned. One concerns frontwoman Grace Perry’s all-around kick-ass-ness; the other makes continual mention of their worship at the altar of classic Earache albums. Just to throw a wrench into affairs, ‘Rusted Eyes Awake’ picks up the tempo dramatically and consistently while working in hardcore influence and D-beat allegiance. The result is what you might expect, but ‘Bile Towers’ doesn’t scrimp on the mayhem and ‘Bled To Oblivion’ is sheer sonic pandemonium. Perry’s voice is scathing and the production value recalls the days of obsessed, hungry bands recording in make-shift basement studios on the cheap. Beautiful stuff, in an ugly way.
