Killing Joke - Absolute Dissent

Rating: 7

‘Absolute Dissent’ sees Killing Joke’s original line-up reunited for the first time since 82’s ‘Revelations’, giving fresh impetus to the band’s ongoing war against apathy and ignorance. Geordie’s sheet-metal guitar remains one of post-punk’s most potent weapons, as Jaz Coleman vents spleen on everything from overpopulation, surveillance and ecological disaster. While the ferocious likes of ‘Endgame’ and ‘This World Hell’ bridle with undisguised rage, there are some touching moments too – the atmospheric ‘Raven King’ pays homage to their late bassist Paul Raven, while the eerie, dubwise ‘Ghosts On Ladbroke Grove’ is a stunning lament for the band’s lost spiritual homeland. Still angry, still vital.
