The spectrum of ideas crammed into the first half of this album is truly astounding. Ushered in by delicate acoustic guitars,
Devine gradually gains momentum. The sparse arrangements accompanying his hushed-tones expand to include richer textures, an upbeat mood that melts as the slow–burning title track sees
Devine creep into darker territory. By the halfway mark,
Devine’s grip on the listener loosens. With 11 songs mostly around the five-minute mark, it feels a bit too much. Now on album number five,
Devine may have mastered his craft, but must tighten quality control measures if he wishes to enjoy the same success as the likes of
Conor Oberst.
