Karma To Burn - Appalachian Incantation

Rating: 6

Calling your album ‘Appalachian Incantation’... really? The legendary reformed (mostly) instrumentalists might as well have included overalls and chewing tobacco if they weren’t interested in quelling the flames of categorisation. Despite this, however, KTB’s first album in eight years isn’t as rustic as the title may hint at. It’s more like the product of rubes moving from them thar hills to the big city. There’s a smoky, shuckin’ ‘n’ jivin’ rock feel (with cowbells!), yes, but it’s tempered with a refined technicality, especially in the way Rob Oswald anchors ‘42’ with slithery hi-hat and snare patterns, and the sheer amounts of vintage Van Halen they pour into ’41.’
