Karl Sanders - ‘SAURIAN EXORCISMS’

Rating: 7

The death metal-style sleeve suggests that Nile guitarist Karl Sanders would rather keep his main band’s fanbase on his side, rather than pull in the fans of experimental folk and traditional Egyptian and Arabic music that his second solo album explores. Slow, almost ritualistic drums play off guitars that extend their tentacles to many Eastern regions, rather than ‘merely’ Egypt. The extent to which it might appeal to Nile fans is somewhat abstract: you could imagine many of these cuts turning up as interludes on a Nile studio album, while the titles are of the long and tonguetwisty mystic metal stripe. ‘Saurian Exorcisms’ suggests he’s got a real knack for this, however.
