Japanese Voyeurs - Yolk

Rating: 8

Since any review of Japanese Voyeurs is obligated to mention the words ‘grunge’ and ‘Daisy Chainsaw’ let’s get it out of the way: yes, JV take their musical stance from early 90s stoner rock, and yes, it’s easy / lazy to label them grunge margin-walkers, but while ‘You’re So Cool’ launches into fuzzy bass grooves that form their primary guitar sound added to with Neu!-esque riffs and the counterpoint protect / fuck me vocals of Romily Alice, it’s actually the ‘Feed’ and ‘Heart Is A Fist’ string sections where Japanese Voyeurs confidently oppose the stop / start ‘Dumb’ dynamics, bending genre rules to their own will to produce an unnervingly unique sound.
