James Yorkston - Roaring The Gospel

Rating: 7

Every now and then pundits try to convince the world that folk is cool but, significantly, the figures mentioned are always Americans with interesting back-stories and / or hair. Never the likes of James Yorkston. His laidback murmur doesn't lend itself to hyperbole.

At times on 'Roaring The Gospel' you can imagine him singing away to himself in the corner of a busy pub, half-hoping that people aren't paying too much attention. Nevertheless, give them the attention that they deserve and tunes like the gently loping 'Are You Coming Home Tonight?' and the raw 'Someplace Simple' have much more to them than initially meets the ear.

It's not just the innumerable instruments involved (guitar, banjo, mandolin, concertina, etc), but also a voice that's compelling without having to roar.
