Ihsahn - After

Rating: 9

08’s stunning ‘angL’ left the masses most likely pondering how the multi-talented Ihsahn could possibly better it. Incredulously, the man has done exactly that. Not since his Peccatum project has he explored this far afield and the result is an awesome experimental event, as brutal and relentless as it is beautiful and progressive. Tracks such as opener ‘Barren Lands’ may turn some heads with its alternative and strikingly melodic approach, whereas cuts such as ‘A Grave Inversed’ quench the full black-metal thirst. Epic in scope, flawlessly delivered, and simply one of the best heavy metal albums of 09, ‘After’ is a magnificent achievement.
