Howling Bells - Radio Wars

Rating: 7

Altogether intriguing and exceptionally compelling, Howling Bells’ sophomore effort looks likely to propel the Australian-born, London-based quartet into the as-yet-undiscovered realms of the mainstream. The dreamy pop sensibilities and haunting melodies, coupled with the soft, soaring vocals of Juanita Stein, layers of jangled guitars and subtle hooks, amount to a pleasant little package laced with 80s nostalgia. Forthcoming single ‘Cities Burning Down’ offers a certain familiarity and comfort, with its steady, hypnotic beat and scope for popularity, but is by no means the album’s standout track – so be sure to probe further in order to discover the gems.
