They might have caught our attention last year by simply being as loud as Satan’s balls slapping together, but this four-track EP proves Holy State shine brightest when they dial down the noise and let the juddering heft of their songs speak for themselves. Witness: ‘Skull On Skull’ is as achingly sludgy as the name suggests but is underpinned by menacing guitar chimes, while ‘The Beaus And The Oglers’ ducks and punches like a street fighter but still has time to take a breath every now and then. Both hugely promising and impressive in itself, this should catapult Holy State into a new realm of acceptance.
