Hawks And Doves - Hawks And Doves

Rating: 8

After a clutch of single releases under the Hawks And Doves moniker, former Planes Mistaken For Stars frontman Gared O’Donnell makes a welcome return to comprehensive recorded output with this self-titled debut. Joined by members of Hot Water Music and The Ship Thieves, this is however very much the O’Donnell show. That thick as treacle, shredded-glass vocal remains the focal point, with the pace and intensity brought down a notch, while the whiskey and sex factor is cranked up to the max. ‘Say When’ is darkest Americana at its best, akin to ‘In Bocca Al Lupo’-era Murder By Death. This could be the start of something special.
