Having dropped their old Chickenhawk moniker and opted for the marginally less-dodgy
Hawk Eyes, there is much to prove on ‘Mindhammers’ for the Leeds four-piece. Unfortunately, where the band’s live show is ferocious, this five-track effort feels reserved, and it’s a shame that their urgency hasn’t translated particularly well on record. That said, their gritty and moody post-rock is nothing if not balanced, and the songwriting shines through with a little patience. There’s enough of an indication that their eventual full-length looks promising – as long as they’re allowed off the leash to push the crunchier end of their sound.
