Gary Numan - The John Peel Sessions

Rating: 8

Technoid, influential and innovative are words that could describe the iconic Gary Numan. This collection, recorded over three Peel sessions from 1979-2001, encompasses many of Numan's trademark songs. It takes in decisive eras in his progressive career, namely the seminal pre and post 'Replicas' periods and the career-changing 'Pure' songs.

Early material sounds paradoxically retro-futuristic, particularly the magnificently panoramic 'Down In The Park' and a seminal rendition of 'Cars', with its harsher experimental take more for the Numanite. The first-time-available 'Pure' session display his later and more contemporary, darker industrial-rock side, with the massive-sounding 'Rip' phenomenal.

This isn't just a compilation; it's a piece of musical history and is recommended for any fan of electronic and industrial music.
