Foxy Shazam - Foxy Shazam

Rating: 7

It’s refreshing when an album like Foxy Shazam’s drops onto your desk, even if your first reaction is, ‘What the fuck is this?’, which, from the minute those heavy metal riffs and trumpets kick in, it most likely will be. For six years now the Cincinnati glam rockers have been defying genres with their sheer musical audacity as present on both 05’s ‘The Flamingo Trigger’ and 08’s ‘Introducing’. As opener ‘Intro’ moves into ‘Bomb Away’ and FS begin their stream of glamorous foppery, it’s clear that the third album from this self-described “rabble-rousing pack of fucks” is no exception. ‘Wanna-Be Angel’ is both dizzying and grandiose, while ‘Unstoppable’ sounds like a camp hybrid between Queen and Luke Toms as vocalist Eric Nally soars to ear-splitting vocal highs. As with all of Foxy Shazam’s back catalogue, this album will divide opinion between love and hate (much like Erasure did), but anyone would be hard pushed to find a band who manage to be hugely versatile and retain a strong identity of their own – and let’s face it, Foxy Shazam have plenty of personality. Decadent, flamboyant and camp as hell, it’s hard to deny the oddly appealing impression this leaves.
