With the demise of
Nine Inch Nails (
Richard Patrick served as a one-time guitarist), there are some pretty big industrial shoes to fill and
Filter have waited long enough to step into them. More industrial than 08’s ‘Anthems For The Damned’, this fifth effort should slip them into that position. With lyrics pointed towards
Patrick’s flaws (check out the opening three tracks) ‘…Angels’ brings together the coarse rock grooves of ‘Absentee Father’ reminiscent of
Alice In Chains) with more poetic fragile expressions like ‘Fades Like A Photograph (Dead Angel)’. The only dodgy aspect being the unfortunate vocoder on
Patrick’s vocal (‘The Inevitable Relapse’), recalling
Cher’s ‘Believe’. Almost celestial.
