Farewell To Freeway - ‘ONLY TIME WILL TELL’

Rating: 6

Canadian quintet Farewell To Freeway’s second album delivers big on both the aggression and the melodies, which might make some think they’re a heinous Killswitch Engage rip-off. But there’s more to them than most naff metalcore clones. For a start, they’re a lot more intricate and thoughtful with their use of melodies – they at very least go beyond lazily throwing in a clean-vocal chorus as an afterthought, before generically reverting to breakdowns and grunts. Plus, they regularly vary their style (‘Years’, ‘Here As One’) to keep things interesting, and include a decent instrumental track, ‘Waking The Giant’. Unfortunately, being better than sub-standard peers is only enough to make them good, not great.
