Fair To Midland - Arrows & Anchors

Rating: 8

It’s been a four-year wait for Fair To Midland’s fourth album – and the Texans have used the time to build a beast. The beauty of their sound is its unpredictability: fragments of rock, metal, folk, punk and pop collide and smash, creating Frankenstein monsters that spark into life and chase you down. And they’ve never sounded more convincing than this: the schizophrenic, System Of A Down riffs of ‘Whisky & Ritalin’ and ‘Rikki Tikki Tavi’ blindsiding you as they burst out of nowhere, and the powerful melodies of ‘Amarillo Sleeps On My Pillow’ and ‘Musical Chairs’ hammering into your memory in an instant. It’s breathless stuff.
