Elliott Smith - New Moon

Rating: 8

We hardly need reminding of what a fantastic talent passed away in 2003, but 'New Moon' will remind you regardless. This double CD compilation of songs written and demoed between 95 and 97, when Smith was arguably at his most prolific and effective ('Elliott Smith' and 'Either/Or' topped and tailed this period), is a moving document that shuns any hint of money-making opportunism. The tape is hissy, but that just helps transport you backwards. Most of these songs must have missed out on the respective albums by a gnat's breath, because while a couple of them rush by in a blur of whispers, there are moments of utter class to be found, especially in 'High Times', 'New Monkey' and 'Seen How Things Are Hard'. A beautiful album; a perfect reminder.
