Eddie Vedder - Into The Wild

Rating: 6

It's an equation that's been proved over and over again: musician with too much time + film soundtrack offer = load of pretentious old bollocks. Thankfully (and perhaps unexpectedly) Eddie Vedder has kept things extremely tuneful on this collection of songs from the new Sean Penn film. Mid-paced and acoustic throughout, much of the album echoes REM during their unit-shifting early-90s phase: 'No Ceiling' and 'Rise' in particular sound like they could easily creep on to an expanded reissue of 'Out Of Time' without Stipe and the boys even noticing. Of course, there's nothing here to rival Vedder's day-job, but it could have been a lot, lot worse.
