Defeater - Lost Ground

Rating: 8

With many fans still taking time to digest and find new majesty in their mightily impressive debut album ‘Travels’, Boston, Massachusetts, quintet Defeater have decided to spoil us with this breathtaking six-track EP. Lyrically detailing the fictional post-war experiences of a man returning to American society after military service, ‘Lost Ground’’s dark conceptual narrative is backed by equally affecting musicianship that is as carefully structured as it is cathartically caustic. Addressing issues in its first person narrative, ranging from human loss, grief and depression to alienation, race, conflict and beyond, ‘Lost Ground’ is a brilliantly conceived slice of true songwriting intelligence.
