Cyclamen - Senjyu

Rating: 8

Despite Cyclamen’s post-prog foundation ‘Senjyu’ is more than a metallic labyrinth. The London quintet’s debut jumps with all the erratic traits of SikTh and leans on Meshuggah’s ‘djent’ tendencies as much as any other progressive-minded act; only Cyclamen’s loaded servings of post-rock euphoria sweeten the deal significantly. Whatever the cut (‘Devoid’ and its minimalist climax, or the complex post-hardcore of ‘Revenge…’) directionless meandering is spurned. And while that break from convention is very commendable, it forces sharp genre divisions between tracks which may prevent the listener from fully bonding with ‘Senjyu’ as an entire offering.
