Culted - ‘Below The Thunders’

Rating: 7

When we hear about “bands” who’ve never actually physically played together, the red flags rise and wave wildly. Thankfully, the music of this Swedish/Canadian internet collaboration (featuring members of Deadwood and Of Human Bondage) isn’t the sort requiring technically precise gelling. Culted blend doom, drone, industrial and black metal and ‘Below The Thunders’ is all throbbing soundscapes and barren atmosphere from which the member’s isolation from one another has been beneficial. There’s a driving, mechanized pulse to most of this as layers of processed guitars and distorted vocal wailing ice the cake. A cake made out of scrapyard remnants, crow’s blood and blast furnace slag.
