Cougar - ‘Patriot’

Rating: 8

As multi-faceted bands go, Cougar sew an impressive tapestry of styles together into a series of distinct landscapes. Polyrhythmic Fugazi structures merge delicately with angelic post rock and the sort of even-handed electronica that 65daysofstatic might produce if their parents forced them onto Ritalin. Throughout, ‘Patriot’ has a descriptive earthiness to it; the choral intro of ‘Rhinelander’ gives way to down-tempo beats that sculpt visions of sunrise vistas while glorious closer ‘Absaroka’ evokes the setting sun on a misty horizon. Perfect through headphones on the way to work, Cougar might just make you see the world in a more positive light.
