Cold In Berlin - Give Me Walls

Rating: 7

Garage rock / no wavers Cold In Berlin exude gutsy guitar riffs and dread-filled howls on debut ‘Give Me Walls’. Fronted by My, whose voice breathes heavy stories of volatile sexuality perfect for wrapping animalistic howls around, tracks ‘God I Love You’, ‘Break My Bones’ and ‘Powerful Woman’ beat with relentless anxiety. ‘What Went Wrong’ and ‘Inertia’ are invaded by raunchier, sex rock moments – think Karen O’s gusto meets Romily Alice’s whispy little-girl voice / demented devil dynamics. Billowed by garage rock overall, the album is kept interesting by lighter indie punk moments rather than an invasion of intensely overbearing screaming. Masochistically enjoyable.
