Codes In The Clouds - As The Spirit Wanes

With their second full-length, Codes In The Clouds continue to plough their furrow of cinematic post-rock. While a couple of tracks wear thin too quickly (‘Washington’, ‘Cold Calls’), the majority of ‘As The Spirit Wanes’ shows progression, if slightly veiled. Simple but pronounced bass adds weight while several tracks reveal textures and swells akin to the most epic of indie acts. If Hope Of The States were post-rock-influenced indie, perhaps Codes In The Clouds are evolving into the opposite. Highlights tip in favour of the album’s front end, the opening triplet offering organic drumming, uplifting sunshine beats and delicate song shifts respectively. A decent follow-up.
