Celeste - ‘Misanthrope(s)’

Celeste are not what you would call happy bunnies. Rock Sound has no idea what they’re screaming about (rather inconsiderately, all their lyrics are in French), but if we had to hazard a guess as to their overriding message, it would be this: you’re all fucked. ‘Misanthrope(s)’ is an utterly relentless record, both soul-cavingly bleak and psychologically harrowing, blending equal parts doom, sludge and caustic hardcore with lingering touches of black metal malice. With zero deviation from this formula, it does become gruelling after a while, but then again, maybe that’s the point. Abandon hope all ye who enter here…
