Boris With Michio Kurihara - Rainbow

Rating: 8

Fresh from getting their drone on with Sunn O))) on last year's superb 'Altar' collaboration, Japan's scarily prolific chameleonic rock combo have now joined forces with revered psychedelic guitarist Michio Kurihara (Ghost, ex-White Heaven) for a more accessible, though no less noteworthy, sonic excursion. For the most part, the trio go about their business with grace and restraint, with axe-maiden Wata contributing some beautifully understated vocals to the lounge-infused title track. At the other end of the spectrum, Kurihara furnishes 'Rainbow' with its most intense moments as, seemingly possessed by the ghost of Hendrix, he lets rip with well-timed explosions of scorching, stratosphere-scraping shredmanship. Simply put, this is a match made in psych-rock heaven.
