Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy - Beware

Rating: 8

Hot on the heels of 08s well-received ‘Lie Down In The Light’, and his somewhat lugubrious contribution to Norwegian ice-maiden Susanna’s recent covers album, Kentucky’s mordant country troubadour returns with perhaps his most majestic album to date. With an ever-expanding cast list that includes The Mekons' Jon Langford and Rob Mazurek, ‘Beware’ sees Will Oldham’s alter ego’s fragile songs write on larger canvasses than before, from the epic swell of ‘Heart’s Arms’ to the sighing horns that accompany ‘You Don’t Love Me’’s caustic dissection of a disintegrating relationship. Spoken in hushed tones as BPB’s ‘big’ album, it’s a record that should nail his reputation as one of our most unique singer-songwriters.
