Arsis - Starve For The Devil

Rating: 8

With one eye on smooth melodeath harmonies and the other flitting between passing blues idioms and thrash aggressions, Arsis finally prove they’re not exclusively savants of technical death metal. Gone is the onslaught of noodling guitar that often stifled previous releases, present instead are more expressive yet still prodigious leads. Refreshing too are track titles like ‘Half Past Corpse O’ Clock’ attesting to a lighter take on the death framework. However, ‘Starve For The Devil’ has only a handful of grooves and as a result gives the listener only part of the raw, visceral pleasure that metal of this calibre can provide.
