Alkaline Trio - This Addiction

Rating: 8

Album seven and everything is new again for Alkaline Trio; a new label (their own), a new album and a newly single guitarist / vocalist in Matt Skiba, who has recently opened up to Rock Sound and revealed that his painful divorce provided both the concept and the substance for the 11 songs on ‘This Addiction’. Skiba has described the album as a return to the band’s roots and on the surface it appears that he’s right as the band recorded it in Chicago with producer Matt Allison, the man behind the band’s early material. However, after a few listens it becomes obvious that in their 14-year career the band have come so far and learnt so much that it’s now become impossible for them to wind the clock entirely back. Tracks like ‘Fine’ have a resolute ache, numbers like ‘Eating Me Alive’ brace the obviousness of punk rock with splashes of new wave, while songs like ‘Dead On The Floor’ obviously belong more in the band’s present than past. Alkaline Trio aren’t naïve punk rockers from the Chicago suburbs anymore, as a result this album fails to recapture that innocence but succeeds in creating another strong body of work that the group can be proud of.
