Sonisphere 2010 - Skunk Anansie: ‘Festivals Get Your Shit Together’
The veterans are back with a brand new album but they still can't stay away from the UK's festival circuit. And here's why...
When you're a band like Skunk Anansie, with several days' worth of quality tuneage to choose from, compiling a relatively short festival set must be murder.
Catching up with Skin and Ace just before playing their Saturday set the frontwoman talked us through their back catalogue:
"We've got a massive amount of songs to choose from. I mean there's five albums to choose from, so we're doing a new song from the [forthcoming] album 'Wonderlustre,' one from 'Smashes And Trashes' and then some older classics.
"It's a short set for us today, only 45 minutes. We're used to playing for the minimum of an hour so we've had to be very careful which songs we cut out. But that's the way it is, you know?"
As to festival debauchery, Ace added:
"We've never really been festival animals, but today is the last day of what has been a long run for us, so we might have a few celebratory drinks afterwards. As you can see I'm already on the energy drink."
Rebel. And while touring venues is all well and good, Skin admits you can't beat a good festival for its atmosphere.
"Playing festivals really hones your performance as a band, you get your shit together because you have to just go out and play and things go wrong, but you can't pussy around. You really have to go for it and you really learn your trade. The atmosphere is also really great, and we all love playing festivals."
