Download 2010: Day Three Round Up
Yeah it rained, but the last day of Download 2010 was no washout as Aerosmith, Slash, Young Guns and The Dillinger Escape Plan all put in an excellent shift at the festival.
Aerosmith triumphed on the final night of Download 2010 as they avoided the obvious hits to perform a bluesy set to a crowd of soggy, sodden punters.
The rain arrived in mid-afternoon, just as The Dillinger Escape Plan took to the Ronnie James Dio stage and promptly lacerated the faces of all jn attendence. Providing a very real alternative to the retro theme on the main stage, the New Jersey band played a typically vicious set drawing from all their albums, closing on the heroic opening track of new album Option Paralysis, 'Farewell Mona Lisa'.
Slash also used his main stage set (and massive crowd) to air a selection of classics, including 'Sweet Child Of Mine', 'Night Train', 'Paradise City' and that first Velvet Revolver song which wasn't all that bad.
Earlier, Crime In Stereo entertained the third stage as FM and Cinderella honked their way through lengthy sets, and Young Guns saw a huge audience for their set. Hearts Under Fire played a storming set on the Red Bull Bedroom Jam stage as many people took shelter from the torrential rain before Stone Temple Pilots warmed the crowd up for Aerosmith.
Airbourne and Steel Panther reeled out the obvious cliches (but it's a festival so everyone enjoyed themselves massively, so that's okay) but the night belonged to Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. Opening with 'Love In An Elevator' and slamming out a mixture of huge hits - 'Eat The Rich', 'Walk This Way', 'Living On The Edge' - and blues jams, the veteran rockers turned the atmosphere from 'pretty damp, pretty bummed' to 'very happy, let's have a dance'.
