Devin TownsendCanadian rock maverick Devin Townsend is promising more than just a live show when he hits the UK next year to play at Bloodstock Open Air as part of his European festival jaunt.

“We’ve got a bunch of things planned for these festivals that are actually going to be really rippin’!” he told Rock Sound.

Promising a setlist that will visit much of his solo and full-band recorded efforts, Devin informed us that he’ll be doing more than just playing a gig – he wants to take the audience on a journey.

“I’ve found that by stopping and looking at all the stuff I’ve amassed over the past 15 years, basically I can pick anything. In a way it’s offered me this opportunity to construct something I’ve always wanted to construct, which is to make a spectacle live. The point of it will be, ‘Here I am! Here I am after 15 years, 20 years or whatever – here’s what I have to offer’.”

What he has to offer is a seemingly endless plethora of work, and he intends to deliver his finest moments in way that draws influence from Broadway and West End musical theatre.

“I’ve always been into the whole musicals thing and obviously it’s not going to be anything nearly that cheesy, but [I like] the idea of being able to lead the audience through something. I can start it in one place then take it to [another], end up in another place and have the breadth of music to choose which direction it goes.”

While we’re not expecting any Oliver!-style sing-alongs from Devin just yet, his appearance at Bloodstock 10 is already sounding like one not to be missed.

The Devin Townsend Project release ‘Addicted’ on November 16 on Inside Out / HevyDevy.

Bloodstock takes place August 13-15 2010. For more info head over to www.bloodstock.uk.com.
