Album Of The Year Countdown: Number 10
Our best record rundown starts with Manchester Orchestra's amazing offering 'Simple Math'.
Even though they were already known for laying themselves bare on record, Manchester Orchestra’s third full-length took emotional honesty to new levels – and scaled new musical heights in the process.
What elevated it above their previous work, however, was the way Andy Hull’s quivering vocal was married to some excellently meaty rock ‘n’ roll, which made ‘Pale Black Eye’ feel blissfully euphoric, the title track howl with barely contained anguish and ‘April Fool’ soar like they’ve never done before.
A record designed as much for a party as for the walk home alone afterwards, ‘Simple Math’ was the sound of a band trying their hardest to create something special… and succeeding.
