Record Store Day With Rolo Tomassi
Rolo Tomassi keyboardist James Spence gives Rock Sound his five favourite places to buy music on Record Store Day.
Tomorrow (Saturday April 17) is Record Store Day, a twenty four hour period when the independently owned record stores around the world come together with artists to celebrate the art of music.
It is a great day to go and buy some music from one of these retailers and thus Rock Sound has enlisted Rolo Tomassi keyboardist James Spence to give you his five favourite UK indie record stores. Read the list then go spend some cash!
Resident
Brighton
"This was the first place that I found that stocked our very first EP. It was an amazing feeling to be so far from home and to see our CD for sale in probably my favorite store. They stock a huge variety of music from the obvious to the obscure and there prices are incredibly reasonable. My last buy from there was the new Jaga Jazzist album and I managed to get the most recent Health record for the bargain price of £4.99!"
Monorail
Glasgow
"This is inside the Mono Cafe which serves up delicious vegetarian and vegan food. Monorail is a shop I try to visit every time we're in Glasgow. They have a great selection of LP's and 7"s as well as CD's and cater to a lot of noisier abstract music."
Edgeworld Records
Brighton
"This place is ran by our tour manager Fin's friend's Dad! It's right across the road from Resident above a clothes shop which is ideal when I'm in Brighton as it's easy to hit both up! It's quite small and mainly deals with vinyl. One of my favorite things they do is categorize records by label as well as genres, my best find in Edgeworld was a couple of Dolby Anol 12"s (check them out!)."
Anarchy Records
Nottingham
"Anarchy is a shop in Nottingham, where I currently live, that sells second hand stuff. They buy, sell and trade and I've taken advantage of trading stuff in recently. It's great for picking things up that I've wanted for ages or things I'm only mildly interested in and don't want to pay too much for. They're pricing is incredibly reasonable! I've managed to get a decent amount of Sonic Youth and Radiohead CD's from there for a couple of quid a go!"
Rough Trade East
London
"Definitely the largest, size wise, out of my selections! I think the best thing about Rough Trade is that they're able to have instore performances. When we toured with The Bronx we went and saw them play and it was wild. My girlfriend studies in London and regularly makes it out to instores there. The quantity and variety in Rough Trade is really vast, I could spend literally hours looking through what they have before I make my mind up on what to spend my money on!"
