Periphery
Ambitious, progressive and loud, Periphery are Rock Sound's newest Band Of The Week.
Our newest Band Of The Week have been fine-tuning the material on their debut album for six years. SIX YEARS!
Periphery are a caustic blend of Meshuggah's precision, The Dillinger Escape Plan's aggression and a bazillion other bands' melody, gravity and verve. Formed in Maryland and honed in private, this lot are now ready to take over the world with their unbelievable chops.
Check out our chitter chatter with guitarist Alex Bois and some videos from the band as you scroll down, you can read more about Periphery and a ton of other great new bands in this month's issue of Rock Sound, onsale now from WHSmith and all good newsagents.
Introduce yourselves - who's in the band and what do you do?
"My name is Alex Bois, I play guitar and sing backup vocals as well."
When was your first gig?
"Periphery's first live performance was March 11, 2006 but personally it would have been in the mid 90's, probably a school talent show or something of that nature haha."
Name three bands who inspired you when you were starting out?
"When I first picked up a guitar I was heavily influenced by the grunge uprising in the 1990's but quickly jumped over to hard-rock/metal once I heard James Hetfield's riffing. If I had to pick three I would say Metallica, Pantera and Nirvana."
What's your practice room like?
"We've never really had ONE practice room. We've probably rehearsed in over twenty different places in the five years since the band formed. We're currently rehearsing at a studio in Maryland called Misty Hill. It's surrounded by beautiful landscape which is great for mood! It contains a recording studio as well as many practice studios to choose from."

"I think part two was my favorite. When I saw that holographic Jaws pop out of that billboard, I was in love! The first BTTF would be my second choice, It’s the original and contains many quotes that I still hear today! Part three was good but lands in last place on this, I remember liking it, but the whole wild west feel just wasn’t my cup o' tea!"
What was the first song you wrote like?
"When you're young and you're developing your own style, you tend to copy the style or your influences. The first songs that I wrote sounded like Nirvana/Dinosaur Jr./Soundgarden because that who I was copying at the time!"
How do you want people to feel during a Periphery show?
"I would like people to feel like they got what they payed for. It’s hard to get people to come see you perform these days. Kids at home can go on youtube and watch the show the next day for free so why spend the money/energy? Because being in the room and sharing the energy with the band/crowd is the greatest feeling on earth!"
