Band of the Week: Last Witness
New track 'Somnambulism' introduced by Last Witness frontman Theo Kindynis.
"Reading the lyrics to 'Somnambulism' back it seems intensely paranoid, and essentially the lyrics are about just that: paranoia, mistrust and jealousy. At the time I was coming from a particularly dark place and the song is about being made to feel like you have to compete with other people for friendship, attention and status within your peer group. I'd like to think friendship is one of the few remaining areas of life that hasn't become a winner-takes-all competition.
This was actually the first song we wrote for our album 'Mourning After'. We began writing in the summer of 2010 and demoed six of the eight songs on the record with our friend Jamie Frye in February 2011. So we've been sitting on the majority of this record in one form or another for over a year now! The drum part towards the end is actually one of my favourite moments of the whole album.
Musically, I wouldn't say that the song is most representative of the album, but then again, there are a lot of different elements to the record and no two songs really sound the same. We have songs in three different tunings, some really fast and some mid-paced so it's difficult to pigeonhole the album. 'Pan-Am Smile' for example is something that we have never done before; lyrically, the song uses an extended metaphor, and musically it's a tuning and pace that are new to us. I think people will be slightly disoriented but hopefully they'll enjoy the diversity of the record."
Last Witness are currently touring the UK with The Devil Wears Prada, go see them...
